44

Hi, I recently purchased a 44 barn find to start restoring.  I looked and the data tag and was wondering what 44DR ment?  I also was wondering what the difference between a 44, 44K, and 44D other then year.

Thanks

RE:44

Congrats on your barn find purchase.  Hopefully you will have a lot of fun restoring it.

The two letters after 44 in the serial numbers up through sometime in 1952 denote the fuel type (first letter) and tractor configuration (second letter).  In your case, the DR stands for Diesel Row-crop.   A 44 DS would be a Diesel Standard.  Similarly a 44 KR would be a Kerosene Row-crop, 44 GS would be a Gasoline Standard, and so on.  The fuel for LP tractors was denoted as Butane.  So an LP Row-crop would be 44 BR.

Hope this helps.

RE:44

By the way, your 44 DR 4865 would be a 1952 model year.

RE:44

Thanks, but what is confusing me is the fact it's a gas.

RE:44

Most likely somebody swapped the engine some time ago.  Take a photo of the dash.  Does it still have the cast bracket for the shutter control and shut-off cable?  Does it have shutters?

The tractor serial number is also stamped on the top of the transmission case just behind the PTO lever.  Does it match the number on the serial number tag?

RE:44

No shutters

RE:44

Richard,

The stamped number should be the same as the tag on the tub.  You should find the stamped number just in front of the PTO near the clutch pedal. In one of your pictures showing the dash and PTO lever an electrical wire and connection should be laying on the number.

it should say 44?R then 4-5 numbers under them (serial no)

Hope this helps a little!

Gary

RE:44

Richard,

If I may chime in, I think what has happened is your tractor at one point in its life has had the "bathtub" frame swapped out because it was damaged or broke. My MH 55 is kind of like your 44, when I bought it it had a diesel serial number on the frame, but the tractor was a gas burner. After cleaning all the grease and other junk off of the transmission housing I found the true serial number for tractor. As Gary and John B said, there should be a serial number stamped near the clutch pedal. If those numbers do not match what's on the tag on the frame, then I think its safe to say it was a case of someone changing some parts.

RE:44

Thanks for all your inputs on this.  After I can clean her better I will find the serial number on the trans to get the right one.
