33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

Hello All,

So this idea has been on my mind for some time and have finally gotten around to actually putting it out there. I would like to start a MH 33 Diesel registry. As I'm sure you are all aware, it has been long said (and believed) that only 150 diesel versions of the 33 were made. I'm beginning to question that number myself. So if you don't wish to share your tractor serial number on here, you can email it to me. I would like the serial number, variant (rowcrop, standard, single wheel etc. etc.) and state/province you are located in. I would also like it to be known that any information you share with me, I will NOT share with anyone else, Scouts Honor.

As for the Kerosene's, I would like the same thing, serial number, variant and state/province. I know this is a long shot, but just thought I would throw this out there and see what happens.

Cheers,
               Dakota

RE:33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

Hello Dakota       Interesting that you would question the 150 number of the diesel version of the 33's made.  From time to time I have had the same question. Do  you feel there are more or less than 150?  Just FYI
Sn 33D1SF  12501P resides in South Dakota.
The number on the metal tag as well as the number on the trans cover are very easy to read.
Now my question, what does the P at the end of the number represent?  I see JB's sn ends with a P also.  Second question why do we have a 5 digit sn when all the charts show 9782 as the last 33 built?  Any answers or ideas out there would sure be appreciated.

                                                                  AS ALWAYS THANKS

RE:33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

I believe you will find that somewhere around 1953 when Massey started using 4 digits instead of two to describe the model (i.e. D1RF vs. just DR, or D1SF vs. just DS), they also started adding the P to the end of the diesel serial number to denote it was equipped with PSB fuel injection pump.

As for the 5 digit serial number in SD, Keith Oltrogge's data book shows Model 33 serial numbers in 1955 from 9782 - 12607.  So, 12501 would be very near the end of 33 production.  That same data book states:  "Although no actual production figures exist by engine type, some former Massey employees report that only 150 diesel versions were made."

I guess that was always good enough for me.  ;-)   (Where is that emoji button??)

Cheers,

JB

RE:33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

Hello Steve,

I think there is more than 150 33D's out there.  I know its probably a long shot as there is probably some hiding in nooks and crannies across the US and Canada. Maybe even some in Austrailia or Europe (anyone from there want to elaborate on that??) that no one knows about. I know it will take some time and I'll be following the auctions a little more closely and who knows, I could be way off and there truly was only 150 built, but it sure would be interesting to find out and maybe settle the debate. How many do you think there are out there?

Ditto on what John said!

     Take care,
                     Dakota

RE:33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

Dakota,

I currently own 33D1SF 12423P  and it resides in Wisconsin. I have also owned prior 33D1SF 12418P which now resides in southern Minnesota.
And as stated earlier the P at the end of the serial number does call out that the engine has a PSB rotary injector pump. You will see an A on some other models that used the APE inline injector pump. That information is not speculation, it is stated in the front of most models parts or owners manuals in the serial number nomenclature breakdown.
Also, I was told at one time that the production estimate of 150 units came from the number of ED201 engines that Continental aledgedly supplied Massey Harris in Racine. If the number of engines shipped was 150, then there couldn't be more than 150 diesel tractors produced. Potentionally pure speculation but a good story.

   Thanks,

      JMB

RE:33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

Hello John Brown,

Thanks, I will add them to my list. Interesting, I have not heard that before about the engines. That would make sense if that's the case. Regardless, I still want to try to find as many as I can, be neat to know where all 150 or so ended up!

Cheers

RE:33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

Thanks JB and Dakota for coming back to my post.  Thanks for the good info.  Dakota I have no idea how many 33D's were made.  I have always more or less accepted the 150 number but from time to time I do get curious.

No for the real tough question, JB or any one else what is the suggested number of 33DS's?  At one time when we started collecting Massey's the talked about number was 15 to 20.  Almost think there must have been more as we can  almost name that many ourselves. Not a real earth shaking question just looking for some ideas.  If anyone has any ideas please respond, nobody can prove you wrong.

                                                                AS ALWAYS THANKS

RE:33 Diesel/Kerosene registry

8159P is on an auction near Carlise, Ia. tomorrow Sept 26. Engine appears to be stuck. Tinwork is pretty decent. No idea if the pump is any good. VanderBrink auctions.
