Nearby the Pickering show we went to is the heritage North Yorshire Moors Railwat still running steam locomotives.  We went for a trip and to our great surprise and pleasure found that we were to be pulled by a Mallard class loco.  The Mallard for a long time held the world railway speed record (I'm pretty certain of this).  This is it's sister loco the Bittern which is of exactly the same style and how majestic it looks.

One classic MF tractor that did take my fancywas this MF 175 in nicely restored but not "over done" condition.  Whilts not rare in the UK they are not exactly thick on the ground in the UK and good specimens are increasingly hard to come by.

I've just come back from visiting a friend who really knows his railway engines.  These locomotives belonged to what is known as the Gresley Pacific Class after the name of the designer Sir Michael Gresley.  The Mallard which established the world speed record clocked 126 mph.  114 of these class of locos were built and 6 still survive.  All had names besides a British Railway number.

They are:
Mallard
Bittern
Sir Nigel Gresley
Dominon of Canada
Union of South Africa
Dwight D Eisenhower

The Dwight D Eisenhower is now in American possession and has recently been over here on show with others of its class.

This class of locos was built between 1922 and 1938.  Dwight D eisenhower and the Bittern were built in 1937, the Mallard in 1938.

A marvellous age!

The Bittern which I showed in the photos was apparently recently run up to 91 mph.

Not a show but a Tractor Road Run we did on Monday around The Stanford Training Area near Thetford. It consists of 45,000 acres the military use for training including live firing which luckily they weren't doing on Monday. For obvious reason the public are banned from this area but as we were doing the run in support for Help for Heroes we were allowed onto the site.

About fifty tractors took part. Here are some pictures of the Massey that took part. Two MF 65's, a 675, a 2640 and a nice 135 Narrow.  

Unfortunately we didn't come across any M-H Tanks.

RE:Massey's around the UK Shows in 2013.

Yesterday I went to the Suffolk Show. On the local dealers stand was a nice MF Beta Combine but I found the M-H 21 on the Harvesting Through the Ages more interesting and the M-H 203 which has come from Australia at sometime and which I think was at the show in Norwich a couple of months ago and also a Ferguson Steerage Hoe.

Now I know why I did not see you at Carrington Rally this weekend Alan,

Thank you for the photographs, the harvesting through the ages looks a very nice display with the M-H 21 leading the later era's of Ransome and Class combines.

I know this is not Massey but this photograph I took recently at the Newark Show really charts the development of our grain harvesing here in UK from the threshing machine of the early 1900's to todays modern combine harvesters.

I was sorry to miss Carrington Malcolm. I hope you had a good show.

It's nice for the public to see how harvesting has changed so much I think. I can well remember working with the threshing machine.

We thought this year our Carrington Rally was going to be break the tradition of "wet weather and muddy fields" we have had several weeks of sunshine and getting the field prepared the previous weekend we got sunburnt, it was scorching hot and made hay in three days to prepare for what looked like a "record breaker" almost 300 tractors entered, our main theme this year being Ford and Fordson, well supported by exhibitors from all over the UK, we also started a small feature this year of 100 Years and older, over the next few years we hope to see this expand and help generate more interest in the early Veteran tractors which we like to encourage at our rally.

Well come Saturday morning it just rained continuous for most of the day, most transport and camping vehicles had to be towed onto the field,with water standing in the low spots, by some miracle Sunday morning it dawned bright and sunny with a breeze, by luchtime the field was drying and we attracted a good crowd of visitors, Monday was a public Holiday here in UK and the show continued with another superb day, so we turned a "Saturday disaster into a Sunday success.

Here are a few photographs of the 100 Year Old Feature at our Rally, I also took the opportunity to photograph my transport as the two tractors are 100 Years apart and just shows the progression, I wonder what they will be like in another 100?

Very cool pictures Malcolm.  Did you have to make a custom three point bracket for the tractor to lift the front of the cub?

It is amazing how different the transports are in the USA verus the UK.
