RE:Massey 81s and 82s

Some really interesting history has been shared here and many THANKS to all who have shred info and commented. John, what a great thread you started and I know I learned a lot!

I'd still like a chance to own one of those cranes!

RE:Massey 81s and 82s

Hi Keith,

Wel I hope that what this web site is all about is LEARNING about our Massey-Harris history.  The more that contribute the better.  However this learning process is limited by the fact that Non members of MCA cannot contribute but the site clearly has a massive non member following.  The fact is that they are simply forced to use the site as almost a magazine - to be viewed only.

I would like to ask the MCA management to consider how we might overcome this problem in order to extend our Massey knowledge.

Is there any support for this vision?  What dioes MCA managment think?

John

Further delving into the archives revelas:

1.  Pripp in his Big Book of Massey tractors says that "the Canadian air force used many standard tractors painted blue as airport tugs"

2. Wendell in his book of Massey tractors reports that the 81 having the gas engine was available with Twin Power.  The 81 saw extensive use in the Canadian air force and that they were not painted red, but were finished in the "usual" camouflage colours.

This begs the question of what these colours were?

RE:Massey 81s and 82s

Yesterday I bought this MH 81 tractor at a sale.

I unloaded it this morning, put some petrol in and a battery on and it fired up straight away.  But it is not charging so a job for another day.

It is serial number427399 which makes it 1946 and only 175 from the end of production of this tractor.

In KO's data book it states that the tractors had 32 inch rear wheels and the pictures show them as being on pressed steel centres.  This one is different in that it is on 28 inch wheels and has heavy cast iron centres but KO makes no mention of this.

Were such tractors just so fitted out at the end of production?  Does anyone know anything??

RE:Massey 81s and 82s

Good to see you and Malcolm at the weekend. Glad you got your tractor home safely. Alan

RE:Massey 81s and 82s

I have just re-read KO's MH tractor data book and now note that the 28 inch tyres were offered as "oversize".  I wonder how many were made with these.  Any ideas out there please

John

RE:Massey 81s and 82s

John,

Interesting, I have an original 81 row crop and it had 28 inch tires on it. Older gentlemen I bought it from in 2010 said that they were the original wheels. He bought new in 1946. have seen 2 other 81 row crops that had 32 inch wheels on them and they were represented as being original.

I would love to get a hold of some manufacturing data from M-H and figure some of this out! Too bad that does not exist..

RE:Massey 81s and 82s

I need a belt pulley for this tractor (just the pulley as it has the gearing on it).  Is there one out there that might be available for purchase?  I understand that it is the same pulley on the 20s and 22s.

Please let me know if you have one for sale

Thanks
John

RE:Massey 81s and 82s

I was lucky and managed to source a pulley for my MH 81 off Terry Kessel.  Thanks Terry for your wonderfully prompt and obliging service and getting it packed up and shipped over here in quick time.  Here it is fitted to the tractor.  Luckily I had some fine thread studs in stock to fit - I just had to get my engineer to shorten them.
