The Massey Family Collectors Of Wisconsin really know how to put on a show!! I thought I was headed to a small town show but when I crested the hill on county road N I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the show grounds. I am not kidding I think this is the largest show i have been to in a long time. When I got there I was greated and welcomed by many people and thanked over and over for comming ( very friendly People). The next day I got there early and walked the swap meet area for about 3 hours and did not even get through 1/2 of it and my legs were telling me it is time to sit down. I don't know how many people were at this show but I would bet there were 20,000 + and I am not kidding!! Here is a picture in the Massey tent.

Reproduction serial number tags

Malcolm Robinson, and Chris Astell have asked me to write a post on here to promote Chris' business of making new reproduction serial number tags and all sort of other plates needed for tractors.

They specialise in the authentic reproduction of chemically etched plates for any type of vintage or veteran item. Chris understand's the importance of accuracy and his attention to detail ensures that every plate is just like the original. All plates are produced to a very high standard and will add the perfect finishing touch to any restoration.

I have had many tags and badges made by Chris over the past few years and every single one is perfect when I recieve them. If there is something new I need all that is needed is just simply take a picture and a measurement of it and he can take care of it all from there.

Here is a link to his website showing more information. Now for some examples of his work.

Bob has about 40 M-H tractors and he got about 30 of them out and invited other Massey collectors such as myself and Malcolm Robinson to bring something along. Malcolm took his No. 3. He carried it about 100 miles down from near Lincoln where he lives on a trailer pulled by his modern MF tractor. What a trip! It took him a bit over 3 hours and the tractor tyres were red hot on arrival!

I had a longer trip - 310 miles - so took along my smallest MH tractor the 812 Pony Vineyard made in France. Not too heavy so made for an easier journey. I also took a load of my cast iron memorabilia and books for a stall. There are I believe only about three of these in the UK and Bob didn't have one so it complemented his line up.

There were also Fergusan and Massey Ferguson tractors, other makes not to be mentioned here, classic and vintage cars, commercial vehicles and a large steam engine in full steam.

MH's full tractor history was well represented starting with a big Bull and Parrett, Sawyer Massey, Malcolm's No 3, the Wallis and Massey U frames, 3 GPs and plenty of war time and poast war tin ones.

I will post some photos of the tractors here, but one at a time as I don't know how to post more than one at once.

First Bob's Sawyer Massey 11-22 which he acquired last year

New book MF 500s

Just thought I would let you know that I have just had my advance copy of my new book from the printers in China. The bulk will be available on sale end of August-ear;y September:

There has been so many good implements go for scrap during the recent high metal prices, this will make collecting more difficult in the future, or maybe those implements we have already collected will get to be more valuable??

I will show you a few M-H implements seen out around the UK shows so far this year

First a very nicely restored M-H grain drill at the East of England Show near Peterborough, this is quite a rare M-H drill with wooden wheels and steel grain box.

The first mention I can find of it (as the Wallis "Bear") is an announcement in the "Implement & Tractor" journal from 1902. This date is also cited in a later M-H/Wallis 20-30 brochure, where it says the following:

"In the year 1902, realizing the advantages of the 4 cylinder fast moving tractor over the heavy, slow, steam or single cylinder type, a tractor was built, later to be known as the Wallis Bear - it pulled ten fourteen-inch plows."

I can't find any further mention of the Bear until around 1912, when it is put into production. I notice that the sole surviving example has an engine with the words "H.L.F. Trebert Patent" on it - a search of Google Patents produces an application for a 4cyl engine design filed by Trebert in 1908 and granted in 1911.

My questions are: What happened to the Bear between 1902 and 1912? Who was responsible for the 1902 design and what kind of engine would it have had? And was the Bear produced at Cleveland, Ohio; Racine, Wisconsin; or both?

Any help would be much appreciated.

All the best

David

International For Real

Well I did something today I thought I would never do!! First I found a MH 820 Pony Manual on the German eBay site. Of course everything was in German. Since I am so fluent in German (NOT) I bid on it and won. Of course later I find out the instructions said they would only ship to Europe. I sent a note to the owner and surprising he responded and agreed to mail it to me. Now the interesting part was he could not speak or read English nor I German. Of course, leave it to the computer!! There is a translator and we translated our notes. It was a very interesting experience!! I did translate my note from English to German back to English and the text got changed a little - like Vineyard became Estate but hopefully he will make sense out of it.

Now we just wait to see if I ever get the manual!!
