RE:Ross Sutherland Estate

I hope you will have your trailer ready for a long raod trip before Massey Days Joe?

RE:Ross Sutherland Estate

It would be extremely exciting if the tractor listed as an MH No 1. was such!!! but I fear that it is a No. 2.  It is I think deceptive in that the gear guards for the large  rear wheel drive cogs have been removed?????

Malcolm,

There is nothing in the world I love more than to have this tractor in my collection, but the last thing I bought from Canada they hit me with a 35% Tarriff!! that is $35,000.00 on a $100,000.00 tractor. That isn't including the taxes and buyer's premium from the auction.
There are many tractors I would love to have on this auction but it is a Long Long ways from my place and I will be busy getting ready for Massey Days.
I do have to agree with John that I don't think it is auctually a #1 but just a #2 in disguise, but I can't be the judge as I have never seen a #1 to compare it to and my knowledge of a #2 is very limited as I don't have one in my collection yet.

RE:Ross Sutherland Estate

Well Joe and John,

Seeing both your comments early this morning, I have now digested all the photographs in detail of this tractor on the auction website. From that my conclusion is now totally agreeing with you both.

Yes it does have the round bulge in the right side hood which was supposedly there for the vertical governor on the No 1, BUT when you look at the governor it is the No 2 style on the waterpump and magneto drive shaft, with the linkage going to the carburetor beng all No 2.

Both front and rear wheels on this tractor do have the earlier style of "wheel hub" which John and I have established from his two tractors over the years. Sorry I can't comment on the rear wheel drive gear covers from the photos, but I do suspect they have possibly been removed in more recent times.
So at this point I do wonder if it was originally a No 2 when it left the Weston factory in Ontario and in the recent times of its restoration it has received a hood from an earlier No 1 ??????????

The tractor does need a good detailed inspection to try and iron out it's originality, I don't see a photo of the brass serial number plate and it would be good to get underneath the tractor to get the Buda engine number if that plate is still in place.
I also see there is a pair of No 2 rear wheels in the sale with gear covers still on.

It will certanbly be a very interesting M-H sale to watch despite the remote location from many Massey Collectors in the USA and all over the World.

Interesting Malcolm!  It would appear to be THE NO.1 that we were made aware of some years ago in Canada but have never seen and never been able to check out for absolute originality.  It is the only presumed No 1 that we have ever come across.

A contact in Canada shared with us these two photos of it in the past.

Joe,

Looks like Mr Trump has just increased the price of that tractor for you by 10% on the tariff!!!!

Such is life.....................

RE:Ross Sutherland Estate

John,
The way it is looking it would be far cheaper to just buy a chunk of land in Canada and keep it there and go play with it when time permits.
Hope they kept the lugs when they put your favorite overlaped tire skins on..
Joe

RE:Ross Sutherland Estate

Joe,

I too hope that they kept that what appears to be a full set of cone lugs.   I think it;s the only one we have seen with such a full set.  I had a set cast for one of our No 2s to replace  as you say "my favourite overlapped tyre skins"  UGH!!
Enough on those!!!!

John

RE:Ross Sutherland Estate

Having looked at the sale photos of the No. 1 again it would seem that there is another definitive feature of the No 1.  It has no sliding inspection panels on the front engine covers either side of the radiator.  The No. 2s have these for accessing the magneto and governor..
