RE:started taking the 55 apart

One thing that I have done is to sandblast the chain. I find that it breaks the rust up around the links and the pins. Seems that it is easier to get your favorite choice of penetrant to then soak into the links, joints and pins.

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Has anyone found a source for new chain???  So far I haven’t been able to find out what size roller chain it is!!!!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Certainly makes sense sandblasting  that chain, I’ll give it try, sure can’t hurt anything!!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

I believe this is the same chain used on the Olivers, their not cheap and if it isn't broken I'd use it over. If you want an easy way to get the oil to soak in just drop it in an old deep fryer and crank up the heat just like cooking French fries. You can pick up an old fryer cheap as most people just throw them out when they get dirty.

That’s quite an idea!!  Have to give that a try!!   I have heated up bearings in a pan of oil on a hot plate when installing them with very good success, may have to inquire at our second hand store and see if can locate a fryer!!  Thank You for the idea!!!!

RE:started taking the 55 apart

So, Dakota have you got into the clutch yet to find out what the problem is/was???

RE:started taking the 55 apart

No not yet. Motor is pretty well ready to come off, hoping to be able to do that this weekend or next weekend. Stay tuned though, I wont leave you out of the "loop", haha.

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Dakota,

Did you get to spend any time with your 55 last weekend?  I dug some tractors out of my lower shed to get to my pair of 44s on tracks for a show next weekend featuring track tractors. Of the tractors here are two 55s I took out, I know you like 55s so I figured it would inspire you to get back at yours.

RE:started taking the 55 apart

Unfortunately I did not, but I did manage to go over to a friends shop yesterday and pick up his engine hoist so we can use it to pull the motor. So I did get that much accomplished. Thank you for the inspiration. I knew you had the one on steel but didnt know you had a rubber tired one. I take it yours are late 40s or early 50s? Would love to find a belt pulley for mine. I still find it interesting that the one has the throttle lower on the steering column than mine.

RE:started taking the 55 apart

I know how it goes as far as trying to get things done as planned!!!  Keep trying to get some accomplishment on my 101 Sr but seems something more  pressing comes up!!  We seem to get some rainfall every week which means grass needs mowing, then theres maintenance on the mower just never ending cycle!!!  Then this time of year here the tractor shows are starting up which means getting tractors out and cleaned up along with the shows!   Oh well it will get done eventually!!!
