RE:What did you do with yours today...?

Ok, honestly this was yesterday, and I was taking it down, but fall decorating

RE:What did you do with yours today...?

My fourth axle refurbishment of the season.  This time on my Wallis 15-27.

New King pins, track rod ends, bushes, pivot pins and a re-set of the track

RE:What did you do with yours today...?

Spent the entire weekend welding up a very badly cracked 25 manifold off the Power Unit, also it was very distorted almost 1/4 inch gap on the right hand side when flat on the head mounting face with no bolts in place, so a lot of grinding to get it to seat and seal with a new gasket, due to excessive grinding had to take some off the back of the vaporiser box where it locates very close to the cylinder head, as you see from the photo the original rectangular sealing ring was very narrow, so made an insert to fit inside to give more of a surface for the vaporiser gasket to seal.
Also fitted a new Rosewood elbow which I had on the parts shelf, if the welding isn't a success I may just have to treat it to a new Rosewood exhaust manifold as well.

There must be some heat in these manifolds when they are working hard to cause that amount of distortion, no wonder it was blowing out of the gaskets and blackened the entire side of the block and head during its last years of hard work on the sawmill.

With it being nice outside yesterday, couldn't pass up the chance to drive the 55 up and down our road a few times. Enjoy.

RE:What did you do with yours today...?

Last night we re-fitted the front axle to my Wallis 20-10 after having it fully refurbished by venerable local engineer.  New centre pins, new king pins and bushes and thrust washers, re-bushed track rod ends.  The tractor now stands so much straighter tho' still needs slight track adjustment.  This is the 5th front axle we have done - next is perhaps the MH 25.

RE:What did you do with yours today...?

An annual job with the U frame Wallis and MH tractors is to drain out any collected water in the oil strainer underneath the main sump.  The requirement for this is because water condenses over time in the large main sump and goes to the lowest point - the oil strainer.  If not drained off enough can accumulate to freeze solid and blow off the end of the strainer.  Many U frame tractors can be found with the ends having been brazed back on.

Annually draining off is a pain of a job and one can end up with oil up one's sleeve when one pulls the square head plug out!

So I decided a slight design modification was necessary and had some brass adapters made to take a brass tap which is so convenient to simply turn and drain off any water.  When done annually it is generally only a small amount of water.  But left for years there can be a dangerous accumulation of it.

Although it doesn't look like original equipment a purist could easily remove the adapater and tap and replace the original square head plug.

RE:What did you do with yours today...?

It got up to 14 degrees today and we had 8-10 inches of really nice snow so Perfect for a nice little ride on the Whizer. Just a little shot of either and 4 pulls and I was off and running! I rode about 5 miles and found muscles I have not used for a long long time, but it was fun!

RE:What did you do with yours today...?

Since my MF 1080 got a little over 56 hour meter hours of work this year, I decided to treat it to a complete fluids and filters change (no idea when that may have last been done before I purchased the tractor).  Engine oil & filter, fuel filters, Multi-power filter, and all new rear-end/transmission/hydraulic fluid.  It also got new front wheel bearings after I found spalling in two of the bearing cups.  And a much needed radiator air-side clean-out.

While it was in the warm shop and it was frigid outside, I gave it a special treat of a cleaner wax on the hood and fenders.  That managed to bring a little more of the original color back.  It is now all set for next season.

I took advantage of it being 78 degrees warmer today than it was last Wednesday (92 degrees warmer if you count wind chill) to move the 1080 out of the shop, snap some photos in the sunlight, and then move the next two projects into the shop.

I disconnected both brake lines and plugged them off on the MF 1100 prototype and was able to drive it around for the first time without dragging brakes.  Brake valve rebuild coming...  Drove it around a bit then pulled it into the shop.

Then I fired up the little MF 135 for the first time since November 2016.  It started without hesitation and ran good.  It needs PTO seal replaced, and will get all new trans/diff/hydraulic fluid in the process.  It will also get an engine oil & filter change, and a little minor cosmetic help.  Power washed it down, and pulled it into the shop behind the MF 1100 s/n 14.

So, that's what I did with some of mine today.

Cheers,

JB

RE:What did you do with yours today...?

Well spring is in the air so I thought I would get the last of my front axles off the MH U frames that need refurbishing.  With my very able assistant we last night removed the front axle from my green MH 25.  It's quite a heavy thing and was more troublesome than the previous five that we have done.   Of particular nuisance were the two slim pins that go through the front pivot pin - hard to get a straight line punch going on them and they were well rusted in.  But we were succesful.  This and the rear pivot pin were well worn and the King Pins turned out to be worse than expected.

Anyawy here is a pic of the front end now without axle.
