RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Joe,

Those reply buttons are getting to be a rare item again, hope someone is keeping the site in order??

Thanks for posting the photo's of Tom's plowing activities, nice to see a Green Pacemaker out at work , those rear wheel weights are a great advantage with the French & Hecht round spoke rears, our British solid cast iron wheels help to give good traction.

Please tell Tom he is missing one small essential M-H accessory for his plowing activities,
I notice he has the plow trip rope tied through the hole in the seat, that's ok until the plow hits a rock and the break away trip on the drawbar works (if the plow has one) Then the rope soon stretches or pulls the seat if the operator is a little slow to disengage the clutch.

Attached are three photo's of the M-H accessory which came new with both new M-H ploughs dad had, I had to take one off my shelf yesterday and fit it into the hole in the seat for a mock up photo for you.

Have you seen any of these across the pond??

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Malcolm I had never seen a M-H safety release for the rope pull on a plough although I think Ransomes did something similar. The old boy who taught me to plough said tye the rope around your middle. That way you will know if the plough hits a rock or if the Drawbar pin comes out. I never took his advice on that one. Alan

Like Alan I had never seen a safety device for the plough trip rope like yours in the photo. we always used, and still do, a short lenth of binder twine twixt seat pan and rope, a weak link if you like. The thought of what would happen to the driver who had put the rope around his waist doesn't bear thinking about. My chain lift plough has a wooden peg which shears under shock load so I carry a spare peg with me, or you can always cut one from the hedge in an emergency, but field hedges are rarer in North America!!

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Your trip rope disconnect is exactly like what we used (minus the button).  You used the ever popular baling wire to attach it to the seat!  It never failed us and we had many disconnects!

Thanks for sharing this! It’s been a long time since seeing one but it is identical to what we used!

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Jack I think the chap who told me to tie the trip rope around my middle probably said it tongue in cheek or he thought I was dumber than I looked!!! I can safely say I never tried it. I tied the rope to the pan seat although I fear if anything had happen I'm not sure what would have happened to the seat. Alan

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Here are some photo's of a typical British scene from the 1950 to 60 era, re created by Jeffrey Gibllin of Essex, some of the long distance travellers from the USA will remember meeting Jeffrey in 2015.
Well this year despite being not well he managed to get his Armstrong Siddeley diesel engine rebuilt on this M-H 701 baler. He is somewhat the British 701 baler expert, having three in his collection.
His son sent me these photo's yesterday of Jeffrey enjoying himself in the summer sunshine, back on the farm where he bought the baler from. and where it spent all it's working life.
He asked they be shared with his Massey friends from across the pond.

Looked like he was enjoying himself on his favourite M-H 744.

RE:Massey Harris Implements.

Way back in September 2014 some of you will remember me posting photo's of the restoration of my M-H Soil pulveriser which was bought at The Smyth sale in Ontario in this "Implements" thread..

Well a bit more information about these unusual implements has just surfaced for me, recently buying a 50 page catalogue called "Soil Sense" by M - H Harvester Company Inc, has provided some useful history.

It looks like these implements were made by "The Dunham Company of Berea, Ohio" who I guess were bought out later by M-H.
Some thought went into the design of their "Culti Packer" logo and trade mark at the time.

Another piece of Massey Harris history unfolding and for Alan Harris and his excellent wrench book, are there new additions from this Company for your next print run??
