RE:Challenger in buckets

Dan,

Any progress on the Challenger? Do you need a little coaxing?

In another post you mentioned knowing Vic lauer for many years. I don't know what your age is but did you ever know or remember a guy named Roger Beason from Lynneville, IA? I believe he has passed away some time ago but just wondering if you knew him. If you did not know him maybe you will recognize his old tractor as I am sure it has made it to the show in Mount Pleasant many times when he owned it.

I bought this Challenger from him Serial # 132266 in June of 1998 I have added a cultivator to it now and use it for cultivating corn

RE:Challenger in buckets

I did not know Roger but I do remember that tractor. I like your cultivator. I have not got back to my Challenger this year as to many other projects have taken my time. I hope to get to it soon. You don't have a set of spare front steel laying around, ha ha. That and the radiator are going to be my biggest expense next.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Joe,

Good to see a few different photo's scrolling around the front page today, some we have not seen before, also looks more like spring at the top of the page now than the winter scene, its good to move forward.

I was pleased to read the history on your steel wheel green Challenger, I had always thought the combination of colour and steel wheels that I had seen it before it was part of your collection, over the weekend I dug deep into my photos and old videos, yes there it was at Mount Pleasant the first time I ever visited there in 1992, even then it took my eye as any CH on steels is quite unusual.

Malcolm.

RE:Challenger in buckets

It is just a year since I last posted on this thread.

We know Dan P has finished his M-H wagon and mower project, so thought he needs a bit of encouragement to get to finishing his "Challenger in Bucket's", hopefully then the "buckets will be empty" and another tractor ready to pull his wagon at Mount Pleasant show this coming summer.

Keep us posted of your progress Dan.

RE:Challenger in buckets

Well I got my son's chore tractor overhauled and all fixed up, even put a coat of paint on it. Now it is time to get back to the Challenger. I am ready to start on the head. I have a few new valve guides but I have never taken the old ones out of a MH head. Do they just press out? What is the chance of breaking the head? Are there any replacements around? I understand that the valves out of a JD 3020 or 4020 will fit it, is that true? Just looking for some answers befor I start on it.
Thanks

RE:Challenger in buckets

Very nice restoration on the Allis this winter Dan, that Persian orange can be a difficult colour to get mixed, I often see many variations at our rally when all the Allis Chalmers are standing together in one line.

Hope to soon see your CH finished and painted too, yes the valve guides do press out, usually without any damage. I have not heard the J-D valve connection, but if your guides are worn and you could locate a valve with a slightly thicker stem the guides could be reamed out to match your valve stem.

I am not sure if a M-H will like having J-D valves put in.

JD Valve. My thought exactly!

RE:Challenger in buckets

So one of the major problems I am going to have is my oil sump is broken and the front cover is gone. It broke off right behind the cover and just ahead of the bolts that mount it to the tractor frame. I imagine these are next impossible to find as most of them would have broke. I thought about getting one cast and have a few extra to sell but I don't have enough of one to use as a pattern. Do these ever show up for sale or what have other people done with their broken sump?

RE:Challenger in buckets

Dan,

This will undoubtedly be frost damage and is very common on the U frames.  One sees many many that have been brazed up quite successfully and maybe you could think of this?  Two tractors in my collection have had this treatment and all is well.

Good luck!

John

RE:Challenger in buckets

I would be willing to braze it but I don't have the part that is broken off. That's the problem
