WANTED Massey 55 western

Just putting some feelers out there...hunting for a 55 western...not too worried about looks just as long as she runs good, has hand clutch, would like to have hydraulics, but not necessary. Thanks

RE:WANTED Massey 55 western

Dakota,

Now you are really getting real about M-H tractors!  The 55 western is a gentle giant.  You will feel like a King (maybe President?!) when you get sat up there.  I have a 55 Riceland which is essentially the same except for the large rice tyres.  I brought it over from Connecticut about 10 years ago and have never regretted it.  Mine is a diesel with two large 6Volt battereis to kick it off.  It is an excellent starter even when cold.  It has a hand clutch as you too are wanting.  It is very light and sensitive.  However it works the opposite way to all the U frame M-H tractors - push forward to engage and pul back to disengage.  This can initially be a bit confusing if like me you have U frame MH tractors.  The only downside I have found to the tractor is that the steering is a bit heavy when reversing and it can be a bit tedious operating the clutch with one hand whilst trying to steer with the other - but it is possible to train one's left knee to operate the clutch so leaving two hands for the steering wheel.  One experiences the same problem revesing GPs in tight spaces.

Good luck with you hunt and keep us informed please.  It sure will be a nice Xmas present for yourself!
John
PS.  It is worth outting an extra step on the rear as I have done - partly an age thing but  it is a high step up and can be a real trouser splitter!!
